Surface Decoration of Clay Artwork

5DL_Nick1When clay comes out of the kiln, it is sorted, labeled for easy identification, rinsed under the faucet, and returned to students for surface decoration.  Clay artwork that is purely aesthetic, such as relief or three-dimensional sculptures, receive paint and dry instantly as the clay rapidly absorbs water.  Functional pottery, including cups, bowls and other containers are covered with a  glaze paint.  These pieces go back into the kiln for a second firing before going home.  They are food- and dishwasher-safe, bringing much joy to creators and their families.
