Four Paintings

Four Paintings

Ideas for learner-directed artworks come from influences in and outside the classroom. A group of fourth graders explored tempera paint yesterday by using primary colors, plus white and black. The painting in the lower right corner of the photo emerged first, as other students were engaged in mixing colors in their palettes. Apparently they liked what they saw from their classmate and appropriated her idea into their own paintings. Having a safe starting-point helps students to build confidence in their own ability to generate ideas.
